On June 23, 2000, the NHL’s two newest teams, the Jackets and the Minnesota Wild, took part in the 2000 NHL Expansion Draft from Calgary, Alberta. Under the draft’s rules, twenty-six of the NHL’s active twenty-eight teams allowed to protect one goaltender, five defensemen, and nine forwards, or, two net minders, three blueliners and seven forwards. The Atlanta Thrashers and Nashville Predators both had their full rosters protected as they had only been in existence for one and two years, respectively. Both the Jackets and Wild were to use their first 24 selections on three goaltenders, eight defensemen, and thirteen forwards. Their final two picks could be of any position.

With the first overall choice, the Blue Jackets selected goaltender Rick Tabaracci from the Colorado Avalanche. Over the course of the draft, Columbus picked up goalie Dwayne Roloson, defensemen Lyle Odelein and Mathieu Schneider, and forwards Geoff Sanderson, Turner Stevenson, and Dallas Drake, among others. Instead of joining Columbus, Roloson signed with the American Hockey League’s Worcester IceCats, Schneider left for the Los Angeles Kings, and the St. Louis Blues signed Drake. Columbus also traded Stevenson to the New Jersey Devils to complete an earlier transaction.

The Detroit Red Wings are a professional ice hockey team based in Detroit, Michigan. They are members of the Central Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The club is one of the Original Six teams of the NHL. The Red Wings are one of the most popular hockey franchises in North America, so much that Detroit is nicknamed, “Hockeytown”. The Red Wings have won the most Stanley Cup championships (10) of any NHL franchise based in the United States, and are third overall in total championships behind the Montreal Canadians (24) and Toronto Maple Leafs (13). They currently play in Joe Louis Arena after having spent over 40 years in Olympia Stadium.

In April 2007, the Red Wings signed forward Kirk Maltby to a three-year extension.

They had advanced to the third round of the 2007 Stanley Cup Playoffs after defeating the Calgary Flames in six games during the Western Conference Quarterfinals and the San Jose Sharks in six games during the Conference Semifinals. Game 1 of the opening round saw the Red Wings’ 452-game home sellout streak (dating back to December 10, 1996) come to end with an announced crowd of 19,204. This was due in large part to expensive ticket prices along with the hard economic times the region was experiencing. The Red Wings lost to the Anaheim Ducks in the Western Conference Finals four games to two . At one point Detroit had a 2-1 series lead and shutout the Ducks 5-0 game 3 in Anaheim.[1] The ducks went on to win three straight games to eliminate Detroit. Game five was the turning point in the series as the Wings were less than a minute away from a 3-2 series lead, but allowed Anaheim to tie and proceed to win in Overtime. They managed to come back from a 3-0 deficit in game six , the score being 4-3 before the game was over, but were not able to rally and force a Game 7. The 2007 NHL Playoffs marked the most successful run for Detroit since their 2002 Stanley Cup Championship, finishing two games away from a birth in the Stanley Cup Finals.

The team was named after the fossil skull of a saber-toothed cat—a species extinct for at least 10,000 years—that was found in August 1971, in a cave during the excavation for the AmSouth Center in downtown Nashville. The fossil is only the fifth of its kind found in North America.

When awarded a franchise, the Predators got a very lucrative deal. The city of Nashville paid 31.50% of the $80-million fee to join the league. The city also absorbs operating losses from the arena, despite the fact that the Sommet Center is operated by a subsidiary of the team.

The Predators first took the ice on October 10, 1998, where they lost 1-0 at home to the Florida Panthers. Three nights later, on October 13, they defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 for their first win. Forward Andrew Brunette scored the first goal on a play that was reviewed by the video goal judge.

The newcomers were, however, hampered by restrictive rules that kept virtually all the top players with the existing “Original Six” teams. They are, along with the Los Angeles Kings, one of the only teams from the 1967 Expansion not to have won a single Stanley Cup: the Philadelphia Flyers won it in 1974 and 1975, the Pittsburgh Penguins won it in 1991 and 1992 and the California Seals/Minnesota North Stars merger won it in 1999 as the Dallas Stars.

Calgary Flames are a professional hockey team based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and play out of the Pengrowth Saddledome. They are members of the Northwest Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL).

The Flames arrived in the city of Calgary in 1980 after spending their first eight seasons in Atlanta, Georgia as the Atlanta Flames. The Flames are the only NHL club to relocate from the United States to Canada. The Flames spent their first three seasons playing in the Stampede Corral, during which they lost only 32 games, before moving into the Olympic Saddledome in 1983.

Calgary’s top rival are their Alberta cousins, the Edmonton Oilers. The two teams have often feuded in what is known as the Battle of Alberta, an always feisty, and often memorable matchup eagerly anticipated by fans of both teams.

The Colorado Avalanche are a professional ice hockey team based in Denver, Colorado, United States. They are members of the Northwest Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Avalanche have won the Stanley Cup twice, in 1996 and 2001. The franchise was founded in Quebec and were the Quebec Nordiques until moving to Denver, Colorado in 1995. The Avalanche have won 8 division titles and had gone to the playoffs in each of their first 10 seasons in the NHL, with the streak ending in 2007. The Avalanche are also notable for being the first team in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup their first season after a re-location.

From the time of their move to Denver in 1995, until the end of the 1998-99 season, the Avalanche played their home games at McNichols Arena. Since then, the Avalanche have called the Pepsi Center home. The Avalanche have a notable rivalry with the Detroit Red Wings, partly due to both teams having met each other five times in seven years in the Western Conference playoffs between 1996 and 2002.

The Minnesota Wild are a professional ice hockey team based in Saint Paul, Minnesota. They are members of the Northwest Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The team’s inaugural season was in 2000.

(2006-07) Signed veteran Free Agents, Kim Johnsson, Mark Parrish, and Keith Carney. On the day of the NHL Entry Draft, they traded the 17th overall pick and prospect Patrick O’Sullivan to the Los Angeles Kings for veteran Slovakian Pavol Demitra. Niklas Backstrom has been the Starting goalie for the Wild since starter Manny Fernandez initially sprained his knee on Jan. 20. Fernandez played for the first time since the sprain on Tuesday, March 6th and was removed after allowing three goals in two periods in the Wild’s 3-0 loss to San Jose. Josh Harding, was brought up from the Wild’s minor-league affiliate, the Houston Aeros, when Fernandez was hurt, and remained on Minnesota’s roster for the rest of the season as the backup goalie. All-Star winger Marian Gaborik returned from a groin injury in January of 2007 and made an immediate impact, bringing a new spark to a lacking offense.

The Wild made the playoffs in 2007 for the second time in team history but were eliminated by the Anaheim Ducks in the opening round. Coincidentally, the same Anaheim franchise eliminated the Wild in their first playoff year, in the conference finals, in 2003.
